Tirdas 1st of Heartfire 4E, 201

Two days had past before I awoke in a strange bed. I didn't know where I was or remember how I came to be here, I was just grateful I woke up in a soft warm bed. What I was concerned about is where my clothes were. I opened the door and left my room, I was in an inn. The inn keep said my clothes were drying. She couldn't take her eyes off me, I guess she hadn't seen a man this way for sometime. I asked her for my clothes and she kindly obliged.

After getting dressed I found out that I did in fact make it to Morthal. Still weak I thought it was best to rest up for a few days. Morthal was a quiet place they calm waters and falling snow. After getting some fresh air I went back to the inn and rested up.
Sundas 30th of the Last Seed, 4E 201

I entered the cold icy pass, I could feel the ice and snow break beneath my feet and I slowly made my way deeper into the unknown. The blood at the entrance didn't fill me with confidence but never-the-less, I continued forward. I could hear it, that unmistakeable sound. It was a troll. I have had plenty of run-ins with trolls in the past. Normally if I see one I run very fast in the opposite direction, but today I needed to get passed it. It was on a ledge above me so I could, if I was careful, sneak past unnoticed. I had to control myself, not let the fear take over me. Every step sounded like I was walking on a bed of bone and hoping the crunching wouldn't draw attention. I slowly got closer to the exit, I could feel my heart racing faster and faster. Was this sweat dripping of my nose or water from the icy shell above me?

I got through the pass and out the other side. It was now night, the snow fell hard and the cold felt very real. I didn't have the right attire to endure such cold and could feel my body starting to go into shock. I needed to get somewhere warm, quick or this cold would take me.

I'm walking blind through snow, there is no moon, there are no starts. Every snowflake that places upon me feeling like a thousand arrows piecing my cold numb body. In front was a warm glow, I could see its light calling to me thorough the dark and the fog.

I crashed into the inn and fell on the hard sturdy wooden floor. I could feel the warmth of the open fire as I passed into the dark, it gave me a sense of calm.

Sundas 30th of the Last Seed, 4E 201

After a few days of journeying I was back at Whiterun. I stayed the night and left at first light. I was going to stop off at a little town called Morthal. So I set off hoping to reach Solitude in a couple of days. After walking across the great vast plains of Whiterun for a few hours I was looking for a place I could rest for a short while. It was too dangerous to stop out in the open so I found a small hollow. As I approached the hollow a hungry black bear emerged. I ran with the bear chasing me I manged to get on the top of some nearby rocks. Safe out of the bears reach it dawned on me that this bear wasn't going to go away. I laced by bow with some poison I made and shot an arrow in to the bear's side. This pissed him off even more and stood up on his hind legs. I drew my sword and thrust it in the bear. Wounded the bear retreated and I knew this was my chance, so I jumped down from the rocks and made haste into the rising peaks.

Running into the high rocks I was faced with a new even more dangerous threat, Sabre Cats. The were feeding on a recently dead hunter and this was the perfect distraction for me to slip passed unnoticed. The path was blocked so I would have to climb the rocks. I manged to carefully climb over them and made my way down the other side. At the bottom was a cottage. I needed a rest and hoped the owner would have some supplies or lest me rest for awhile. I knocked on the door and entered, there was a Dunmer Mage who obviously wasn't taking visitors as he blasted me with a shock spell. I managed to cast a ward spell which took some of the sting out but this was one powerful Mage who wasn't up for small talk. I crashed through the door and ran as fast as I could and didn't stop until the cottage was a distant blur.

Tired, sore, hungry and suffering some minor burns I pressed on hard. The weather was getting colder and the snow was getting thicker. While staying in Whiterun I was told of pass that cut through the middle of the mountain and it would take me north of Mothal. There was a lot of blood at the entrance which was bad news for me. Going back wasn't an option so the only way was forward and with hesitance I made my way into the pass.

Turdas 27th of the Last Seed, 4E 201

I spent the night at Sylgja's and we talked long into the night. I realised that I hardly knew my brother anymore. I left all those years ago and he grew up without me, the last time I saw him was a teenager. I left at first light and Sylgja asked me to drop off a package to her parents in Darkwater Crossing. I decided that I couldn't take Grey with me. It was hard for me to leave him behind but I left him with Sylgja. My journey to Solitude would be long and tough and I had grown very attached to him, but he was old and needed rest.

It was late in the day by the time I arrived and gave the package to Sylgja's Father. They invited me to stay and the camp for the evening. I took advantage of the sulfur pool that was close. This would be the first bath I have had in sometime. I stripped down and jumped into the hot soothing water. I must have stayed in the water for hours as night approached quickly.

Middas 26th of the Last Seed, 4E 201

I woke feeling refreshed, it was the first night I had where I didn't dream. Shor's Stone was only a few hours walk so I got my things together and headed out. I felt bad leaving Riften behind me, but there was not much I could do. I needed to find my brother, that had to be my focus. There will always be someone who needs help and I can't help them all. It seemed selfish but I needed to help myself first.

Shor's Stone was eerily quiet, all I could hear was the banging of a blacksmith and followed the sound. He told me there was an illness sometime ago and that a young Imperial came to help the town. It was my brother, it had to be. I asked for the Imperial's name, "Ildoni" the Blacksmith replied. He told me that he had got close to a woman called Sylgja.

Sylgja was laid up in bed, she had taken a bad fall and was in some discomfort. As I approached her she awoke. "Ildoni is that you"? I sat next to her on the bed and rolled up her trousers. I placed my hand on her leg and used a power I hadn't used for sometime. Her leg was healed and she was more coordinated. "Who are you"? I told her I was Ildoni's brother and that I was searching for him.

"So you're Ertius? Ildoni spoke of you in such high regard. He was so proud of what you were doing. Ildoni came here about two years ago. He heard about an illness that was taking over the village. He helped many but many died. He took it hard and I was a comfort to him. Those that got better left the village and only a few of us stayed. Ildoni stayed here with me and he became our healer. He was here for about a year before he decided to leave. He felt that he could be out there doing so much more, we weren't enough for him. He said he's was going to join the Imperial Legion where he could help treat the wounded. So he went to Solitude. He wrote for awhile but soon after the letters stopped. I haven't heard from him for over a year now".

Ildoni what were you thinking joining the Legion? I feared the worst. He isn't a soldier, he's not even a healer. He always looked up to me, wanted to be just like me. I have no choice, I have to go to Solitude and find my brother.
Tirdas 25th of the Last Seed, 4E 201

The dreams are becoming worse, the fire, my father, the hooded man. This time I saw the faces of the people of Helgen, not just the people I killed but the families of those I avenged. I felt ill, I needed a few days rest but I was so close, I could sense my brother. Could he still be at Shor's Stone? With that to motivate me I continued to Riften, I was only a few hours away.

Halfway there was an Argonian at the side of the road. He said I didn't look to good and asked if I had trouble sleeping. He was a Skooma dealer, I knew I shouldn't but I brought some, just one to help me sleep and stop the dreams.

Walking up the hill the big gates of Riften came into view. The city gates were locked and the guard approached me and tried to shake me down. I couldn't believe it. But what was I to do? I payed the man his gold and he let me into the city. I took two steps in and another man stopped me. He asked me what my business was and I replied "none of yours". He warned me to be careful and not the caring kind. The streets were old and warn and littered with beggars. A woman was intimidating a man on the bridge right in front of the guards. The city was run by a family called the Black-Briars', they owned the city and all the guards, everything went into their deep pockets. This is what my father stood up against.

After the war the Titus Mede II signed a peace treaty with the Thalmor. It was called the White-Gold Concordat, a treaty that gives the Thalmor free rein to stamp out the worship of Talos in Tamriel, and other things. There was uproar throughout the Empire. My father said that he didn't fight in a war where he lost his friends to bend to the will of the Thalmor. So he became a political activist, marching through the streets of the Imperial City. He fought corruption and exposed those who betrayed the Empire. He fought for those who didn't have a voice, who didn't have the strength to fight. And he died for his cause.

With that in mind I walked the city for a while, I got a room at the Inn and got some hot food and stayed in my room for the night. I drank the Skooma in the hope I would sleep better.
Morndas 24th of the Last Seed, 4E 201

By the time I woke Faendal had already left. He told me to keep on the path and eventually I would reach Riften. I was tired and I couldn't shake the events of Helgen from my head. There was something calming about the Rift, it reminded me of home. All the colours of the trees, the yellows, oranges and browns. For the first time in a long time I felt home sick.

After a good day of traveling I came across a camp of two hunters. They offered me a bed for the night and some elk they had obtained. I was tired and it didn't take me long to fall sleep.

Sundas 23rd of the Last Seed, 4E 201

I didn't sleep very well again last night. The same dream I have before, fire, my father, but this time there was a hooded man. I couldn't see his face, he was more of an outline.

Sundas 23rd of the Last Seed, 4E 201

I decided that it was best that I find a guide, someone who knew the way though the South Pass. After asking around a Mer called Faendal agreed to show me the way which passed though Helgen.

Sundas 23rd of the Last Seed, 4E 201

As we approached to the top of a incline in the road there was another dark figure. Was he waiting for me? What should I do? He hasn't spotted me so I could take him down with a quick bow. But what if he was an innocent? What if he wasn't? I unsheathed my blade and told Faendal to be ready. One person against three, I liked the odds. As we approached it was another Khajiit, but he looked different, he wasn't an Assassin. But as I was about to holster my sword he drew his weapon and charged for us. Faendal and I both drew our bows and took him down. I searched the body to find Skooma, he was obviously an addict out of his mind.

As we approached Helgen I could smell the smouldering wood and the burnt corpses. I opened the gate not knowing what I might find. A city in ruins, the smell didn't prepare me enough for what I found. Dead bodies still producing heat after a week. I have never seen anything like this before. My father told of the city of Kvatch and it's destruction during the Oblivion Crisis. How do you rebuild from something like this? The town had been taken over by a gang of lawless bandits. I normally try and stay away from combat, especially when I'm outnumbered. But a rage took over, I thought about all the people that died here. The women, the children. I escaped, I can avenge the dead with my bow and blade.

I left Helgen with blood on my clothes and a scar on my soul. I had killed them, no killed is the wrong word. Butchered them, I butchered them all. No words were spoken between Faendal and myself for the rest of the day. Not until we came to an abandoned shack on the other side of the mountain pass. He told me that he took me as far as he could and in the morning he would head back to Riverwood.

The Shack used to belong to an Alchemist, he had been growing a wide range of different plants. A lot of these were still here. I knew I wouldn't sleep so I made potions till the early hours.
Loredas 22nd of the Last Seed, 4E 201

I woke to a clear and beautiful morning. Whiterun was waking up and the fresh smell of the meats filled the dawn's air.Whiterun was a grand city, the biggest in Skyrim and the central trading post for the country. Before I continued on my journey I needed some supplies. My first call was the alchemy shop, I needed just a few ingredients so some Wheat added to my Butterfly Wings and Blue Mountain Flowers would make a tasty little health potion. I got talking to the store owner, Arcadia. She was form Cyrodill too and asked where I was from, I didn't want to use the family name as I didn't want to draw any unwanted attention to my self. I dodged the question and asked where she was from, she dodged the question also and we both left it at that. I brought some fresh meat from one of the stalls for Grey and myself, a treat for breakfast.

I decided to take the South Pass just as Sinmir suggested, to get to Shor's Stone I would be passing through Riften which was a few days journey. It seemed like a good idea to stock up on some more arrows so my next stop was the Drunken Huntsman. The owner of the store was a spritely little Wood Elf called Elrindir and sold me some good quality steel arrows. The plan was to spend the night in Riverwood and see if there were any guides that would take me to the South Pass. But before that I must have a pint of Honninbrew Mead. As the golden nectar passed over my lips I could taste all those subtle spices and layering textures to make this rich deep mead. This was truly the drink of the Gods.

Shortly after leaving and ascending the hill to start the long winding road back to Riverwood I was met by a figure standing at the top of the incline. He started to make his was towards me, this didn't feel right and as his speed grow haste I knew. I drew my sword and I was locked in a battle against a very skilled Khajiit Assassin. His use of a duel daggers and cat like reflections were more than a match for my sword skills. It was only a matter of time before he defeated me in battle, but I weren't going without a fight. Every attack was met by the blocking powers of this formidable foe. But Just I saw the end coming Grey leapt on to the arm of the Assassin which distracted him momentarily. It gave me enough time to wound the Khajiit and knock him to the floor. He begged me for mercy but I had none to give. I ran my sword though his body and he was dead. I searched the body to find a note,

"As instructed, you are to eliminate Ertius Colollius by any means necessary. The Black Sacrament has been performed - somebody wants this poor fool dead.

We've already received payment for the contract. Failure is not an option.

- Astrid"

Had my father's enemies found me? Were they looking for my brother too?  Am I being hunted? All I had was a name, Astrid. I didn't know who he was or where to find him, but I would. After I find my brother, we'll hunt down those trying to kill us.

Fredas 21st of the Last Seed, 4E 201

I could see Whiterun in the distance, it sat on top of a hill looking down on the land below. The size of the city was evident by the surrounding farms. Walking alone the cobbled path I came across the famous Honninbrew Meadery, (I must stop for a drink there before I leave). Past the stables were the khajiit caravans, I better keep an eye on my coin purse.

I got to Whiterun it was late in the day but I was itching to find out if my brother passed though here. Whiterun felt like the capital of Skyrim, a central trading post. I would spend a day or so here and trade with some of the locals but my first port of call was the Temple of Kynareth. I spoke with the priestess Danica. She told me that the best person to talk to was Andrus the priest of Arklay at the Hall of the Dead.

He was an old Nord and he smelt of old cloth and he obviously hasn't gone outside for sometime. He was a sweet old man and gave up the information I was after willingly.

"Yes I remember your brother, he was lost and in search of something. He didn't know what it was but he was determined to find it. He stayed here for a few weeks helping me tend to the dead. He was a sweet boy who indulged an old man. He said he would head west to a mining village, Shor's Stone, there were reports of an illness taking hold and he had to help".

I stayed at the Inn that night and had a nice cooked meal. After a few drinks I got speaking to one of the locals, Sinmir warned me that the path west was dangerous and a lot of travelers were attacked by bandits. So he recommended I take the south pass through the mountains.

Turdas 20th of the Last Seed, 4E 201

I awoke to a stiff neck and a rumbling stomach, those past few nights in a warm bed and cooked food had made soft. As I stretched I could feel the bones in my back and neck click. I woke Grey up and we had some food before we headed back to Falkreath.

It was the middle of the afternoon by the time I got back to Falkreath. I was hungry and tired but had no time to rest, I wanted to speak to Runil about my brother. When I handed him his journal he asked me if I read it and I replied "Yes" and no more was said about the diary. I had done what Runil had asked and I now wanted to know if he knew my brother.

"I in fact did meet your brother in Riverwood and he came to Falkreath with me. I knew who you were when you came and asked me about him, he spoke of you and what you were doing in Morrowind. He wanted to follow in your footsteps and after he fell out with your father he decided to come to Skyrim. We did our work here for awhile before he decided to leave north. I asked him where he was going but he didn't know. I told him to go through Whiterun and stay at the Temple of Kynareth as they would give him food and shelter".

So Whiterun is where I'll go next, I will speak to the priests at the Temple of Kynareth and hope they have information on my brother. But tonight I'll stay here and head out in the morning.
Middas 19th of the Last Seed, 4E 201

As the cave got deeper the air got thicker, I could hear the sound of a brutish Orc clanging about. There was something different about this one, he seemed stronger than the bandits I've encountered. I told Grey to wait and I went forth to tackle this Orc. As I was walking towards him with my sword at the ready I found myself shouting something about this Orc's parents being related. He was not amused and said he'd enjoy killing me, and I believed he would so best not give him the opportunity to. We found ourselves trading blows our swords locked in combat. There wasn't much room to move in the narrow part of the cave making combat difficult for the both of us. While we locked in a stand off, our swords pressed up against each other I drew my dagger and thrust it deep into his neck. He fell to the ground in a pool of his blood. I fell to my knees, hands shaking, not because of the adrenaline but because of my arms were hurting, this Orc was strong.

I barely had time to catch my breath when I herd the voice of a woman in trouble. I followed the voice and I find a Dunmer caught in a spiders web. I could tell by the skull on her robes that she practiced necromancy. I wanted to leave her to her fate but before I cut her down I said she'd better not try anything or I'd run her through with my blade. She replied "I couldn't even if I wanted to". I cut her down and she explained that this cave was a hide out for a gang of Spellswords and she had joined them so she could practice her necromancy in peace. When I asked why she was left for dead she told me she left for Riften so she could find her daughter who was in a orphanage, but by the time she got there she was gone. So returned and she had a curse put on her which prevented her from casting magic. I felt sorry for her even tough she was a necromancer, she was looking for someone and I could relate. She wanted to leave but I said traveling in these conditions at night would be suicide but she didn't listen and she left. I on the other hand decided to stay in the cave until morning so I made camp and settled down for the night.
Middas 19th of the Last Seed, 4E 201

Our journey for the lost journal continued high into the mountains. The air was becoming thinner and more crisp on my lungs. I had to take it slower as it was harder for me to catch my breath as I was still not used to such cold. I spent most of my childhood growing up on the West Weald. We had our own vineyard and I'd worked on them during the hotter months. I'd give anything to be back there now, instead of climbing up the side of this mountain in the freezing cold. I swear if Runil doesn't tell me what I need to know I don't think the Gods will ever forgive me for what I'll do to him.

The night was upon us by the we got to the cave, there was a guard at he entrance and he was casting magic on him self. I don't like magic and I don't like fighting enemies that use it but a quick bow to the torso and they go down like everyone else.

The cave was cold and wet and water seeped thought the cracks, the way the light caught it was almost magical. A sharp gust of wind caught me off guard and took the breath right out of me but never-the -less I carried on deeper into the unknown cave. There was a big wooden gate, it had only recently been built and I was just about to open it when I noticed magic. It was some sort of rune, I remember seeing Mage's using them in Morrowind at the camps. I almost blew my self up, how was I going to get past this?

I grabbed the dead bandit at the entrance of the cave and dragged him to the gate, I gave my self a minute as dragging a dead body though a cave is a lot harder than it sounds. Now I wasn't proud of what I did next but given the circumstances I had no choice. I tossed the bandit into the rune thus exploding the gate and the bandit. The doors blew open and the element of surprise was lost. The noise must have echoed through the cave alerting everyone to my presence. A group of three bandits came to investigate so I unsheathed my sword. My new companion shot off like he was going for a bone attacking one bandit. The other bandit confused just stood there leaving me to take care of the third. I made light work of him and then his friend and my new dog took care of the other.

My new friend proved himself in battle and I needed to give the mutt a name. Grey, I shall call him Grey. He seemed to like it and it suited him well. Now we must carry on and find that journal.

Middas 19th of the Last Seed, 4E 201

I woke with a sweat from the dream, I only remember bits of what it was about but I clearly remember fire and my father. He told me to find my brother and bring him home and that is exactly what I intend to do. I could smell the freshly cooked bread slide under my door and the crackling of eggs on the open fire. I got dressed and entered the main bar and the Landlady Valga was hard at work cooking breakfast. She offered me some it took me on a second to answer. Two fried eggs, Salmon Steak, Tomatoes and bread. The breakfasts are always my favorite part of staying in an Inn. I brought some apples and some Venison Stew for my journey ahead, but before I left this weird little town I had to pay the blacksmith a visit.

Lod was the local blacksmith and he was already hard at work on this damp foggy morning. I asked if I could use his Grindstone for my sword. It took me back to when I was young on the Estate. We had a blacksmith, he was an old Legionnaire who smithed for the Empire. I think he and my father served together. He taught me the value of a good blade and how to reinforce your armour. It's weird how something so insignificant can take you back to your childhood. Lod reminded me of our blacksmith, his loyalty to his fellow soldier.

It was late morning as I left Falkreath as I walked along the cobbled road I realised that there is a natural beauty to this land. The mountains, the trees everything works harmoniously creating this spectacular scene. I had been traveling for a shot while when I noticed a wooden bridge up ahead. It was a bandit ambush site and they were fighting Thalmor agents. The only thing I hate more than Bandits are the Thalmor. So decided to leave them to it and hoped they'd kill each other but the Thalmor made light work of them. I decided to stay at the side of the road for a while and wait for the Thalmor to leave.

My father once said that Thalmor were the worst thing to happen to the Empire since Titus Mede II. After the war he became very political and in doing so he made a lot of powerful enemies. I remember we used to go to the Imperial City and we'd march at the White Gold Tower. He said the Empire needed to stay united and drive the Thalmor back to Alinor.

I continued on my journey and I still had a long way to go. I could hear a skirmish between some animals. There was a dog fighting off two wolves so I drew my bow and took aim and took down one of the wolves. I approached the dog who seemed friendly enough, I could see no clear owner and a companion would be nice.

Tirdas 18th of the Last Seed, 4E 201

After sleeping slightly longer than I would have liked, my day was filled with optimism. I had a good strong lead and the hope that I was on the right track. Before I set off on my journey to Falkreath I stopped by the local blacksmith to buy some supplies. I had not much in gold so supplies would be more limited than I would have liked. Never-the-less I had enough to acquire a bow with some arrows and an Iron blade.

The road to Falkreath is long and a treacherous one but no matter how dangerous the task in hand is, I must continue no matter what. After a short walk met a poacher, she sold me some of her fish and we ate together by the riverbank. The fish is particularly salty in Skyrim, not like the fish in Cyrodiil. After my short break I carried on my journey. Will there priest be there? Did he even know my brother? All these questions waiting to be answered. The Inn keep told me before I left the road was plagued with Bandits, so I have to keep my guard up. I'm not in a position to fight so I must tread light and keep my wits about me.

A group of Bandits lay of the beaten road waiting to ambush any unsuspecting traveler. My instincts were telling me to kill them. I hate these lawless thugs, they have no honour and they worship no God. But I was outnumbered five to one, so against my better judgment I found another route.

By the time I got to Falkreath the sun was beginning to set but not that you could notice it. There was a fog that fell and death surrounded it. The villagers were weary of my presence, was this because I was and Imperial? Or was there something they were afraid of? I entered a goods store called Gray Pine Goods. As I opened the door I was met by a burly Nord by the name Bolund and wasted no time in telling me I was not welcome, and that was putting it lightly. His brother Solaf was more accommodating and apologised for his brothers actions. Normally I would have smacked the guy in the mouth but a night in the cells is the last thing I needed right now. I asked if there was a priest in the town that spent time in Riverwood a few years ago. Solaf pointed me to the graveyard.

I found myself at a very large graveyard where a priest was conducting a ceremony. I payed my respects to the dead as I did often. The scene reminded me of that I saw in Morrowind, fields of gravestones and people mourning. I spoke to the Priest, Runil and asked him if he was the one that was in Riverwood and if he knew my brother. He told me he could tell me what I needed to know but only if I helped him find his journal. I had to fight off the urge to take my blade and press it to his throat, but he was a man of the cloth, so I agreed to get back his journal in exchange for information on my brother.

I took the advantage of staying at the Inn for the night, I would track down the journal in the morning and demand the answers I seek. A soft bed and a warm meal is a hard thing to pass.

Morndas 17th of the Last Seed, 4E 201

With the ruin of Helgen now firmly behind me, my next stop was a small town of Riverwood. I was hoping that someone may have remembered my brother passing though. This was a long shot as it was over three years ago, but this was the only lead I had. The long walk gave me time to reflect on everything that happened. As I approached this small tranquil village, the sun was firmly setting and the light caught the flickering water.  I could smell the damp grass and the aroma filled the air like an expensive perfume. I was tired as I had not stopped since I left Morrowind almost two weeks ago. I could feel the blood from the blisters on my feet everytime I took step.

I entered the Inn and the warmth of the open fire hit me as if the gates of Oblivion themselves had opened right in front of me. The smell of freshly cooked food and ale in the air made my stomach rumble like a dragons roar. This was the first warm meal I had since Bruma a week ago. I asked the barkeep if he had remembered seeing an Imperial of about 20 years of age passing through 3 years ago. He thought he did but couldn't remember, he said there was a priest staying at the Inn about that time and thought there was an Imperial with him but left for a village called Falkreath. Could this be the start of the trail that leads me to my brother?

                                                                     An Old Dawn

As I left behind the smouldering town of Helgen, the strong smell of burnt timber followed me down the road like a stalker in the shadows. The smell brought me back to the night my journey had started, to the night my father was murdered. I was a mile away from the manor when I saw the orange glow lighting up the night sky and the faint aroma of burnt timber passed over me. Even though I was exhausted from the long ride from Morrowind, I rode hard and I rode fast towards the family home. As I approached the gate the house was ablaze, the flames dancing and taunting me. The guards had sealed off the area as the growing number of spectators grew. I pulled up my hood in the hope no one would recognised me and why would they? I had been gone for long 7 years. Fearing the worst about my family I knew there was only one man who could help me, an old friend of my fathers, if my family were alive he would have helped them. So I made my haste and started my short journey to Skingrad.

By the time I entered the city it was the dead of night. The streets were empty and there was a strange eeriness about them. I knocked hard on the door hoping to disturb the occupants of the house. The weary-eyed servant opened the door as I demanded to speak to the head of the house. Leondeiu Pelelius, my father's oldest friend. It took him awhile to recognise me. "Ertuis? is that you?" "Leondeiu, where is my father? the house"… We went into the drawing room where he pulled himself a very large glass of brandy. Leondeui explained that while I was gone my father made some powerful enemies and that this was a message. They had burnt down the family home, my mother and sister had managed to escape through an underground tunnel and were in hiding. "Ertuis, your father didn't make it out of the blaze". "Where is my brother? Where is Ildoni"?
